Devon In Ink

Welcome to my website,

I decided to produce a series of images that concentrated in one area, initially south Devon and Dartmoor. The images are generally of historic sites and known landmarks with their roots in the Bronze Age mining activities, travel, beliefs and folklore. I hope you enjoy viewing these drawings.

The Artist

I am a self taught 50-something who, as a teenager, studied black and white photographs in newspapers to discover how the spread of printed inks produced a reasonable picture. Following early experiments with pencil and basic inks, which did not give the desired result, I moved on to Rotring pens, which allowed more precise ink delivery. As time went on I graduated from the use of a .25mm pen to a .10mm pen and my current preference is for Rotring Isograph pens in 0.25mm, 0.18mm, 0.13mm and 0.10mm sizes.

The images

While my accuracy and style have developed there has been a marked increase in the time needed to complete an item of work. The more recent images have taken 150 to 300 hours of painstaking, fine and accurate pen movements - strokes, squiggles, dots, lines, etc. There is little room for error, but a magnifying glass and a steady hand helps.

Unfortunately, the image reproduction possible on this website does not really do them justice, so please feel free to contact me using the link below if you wish to view a larger sample of my images.

I am currently working on an image of Brentor Church and I have completed drawings of the following locations which are not included within these pages

Exeter Cathedral; Bayards Cove, Dartmouth; The Dutch House, Topsham; Strand End, Topsham

To those of you who have copies of my work on your walls as a result of letterbox meetings, I hope to be able to meet you once again in the not too distant future. If, in the meantime, you would like to contact me please feel free to e-mail me using this link.
